General Guidelines

Our general aesthetic is that we are looking for stories that we will love, as readers ourselves. We've said in the past that we tend to like quirky stories with subjects like truck driving and mathematics and vagabonding but not really stories that rely too heavily on their quirkiness. We like stories with humor but are not looking for humor pieces. At one point a reader summed up a couple of our stories as "humorous but engaging" and we like how that sounds. Another reader said "literary but not stuffy". We realize no one is trying to do stuffy but, still, we think it was a good assessment. Mostly, we just want to get excited about your story as a reader and hope you will send your best work.

Please don't submit a second story until you have received a response on the first.

If shorts (1,000 words or less), you can send up to three, though include all in one document.

Payment:

For Print:
For a while there, we were trying to pay contributors, usually between $50 and $150, depending on the total number of printed stories, available funds, etc., but funds have run out for the moment. We are trying to get back to this place and so... you know. If that's something you believe in, maybe consider subscribing or donating some money for the good cause?

For Web:
Mostly gratitude and thanks. We're a very gracious bunch. But! Also! All contributors to Hobart: website will receive a one year (2 issue) subscription to the print journal.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us at aaron@hobartpulp. Please note, however, that all correspondence regardings submissions (withdrawals, etc) should be done through our online submission manager.

PRINT

(pdf, doc, docx, txt, rtf, jpg, gif)
7,500 word limit
Submit only one story at a time. If shorts (1,000 words or less), you can submit up to three stories in a single file, but please note: we very, very much encourage shorter submissions be sent for web consideration. Primarily, for print and with regard to shorter pieces, we are looking for shorts that either fit the theme (when we are reading for a theme) or that work together in a kind of series. Otherwise, chances are high that even if we love it, we will ask if we can publish it on the website, and so why not just send it there in the first place? Thanks.

Simultaneous submissions are not only allowed, but encouraged. With this new submission manager, you have the ability to withdraw a story at any time, so if it gets accepted elsewhere, please withdraw it here immediately.

WEB FICTION

(pdf, doc, docx, txt, rtf, jpg, gif)
2,000 word limit
We, of course, recommend you be at least vaguely familiar with what we have published in the past. Once that is out of the way, there really isn't much more we can tell you. More instructions would really only clutter this page, wouldn't it? We want stories that are what we like to call "web-friendly" meaning, shorter than about 2,000 words or so though 1,000 or less is even better.

Submit only one story at time, not more than 2,000 words (but shorter than this has a better chance, to be honest). If you're submitting short shorts (around 500 words or less), you can submit up to three stories in a single file. Multiple submissions will be deleted unread.

PHOTOS

(pdf, doc, docx, txt, rtf, jpg, gif)
We're always looking for great photos and artwork to go with our stories.

However, due to short deadlines and busy schedules, we are often finding and choosing images to pair with stories relatively last-minute. As such, we do not always have time to contact people for the rights for specific photos. If you would like us to consider your artwork for the website, we ask that you submit your work via a flickr account (or something similar), and that any work you wish to have considered be licensed as attribution (as a minimum) via creative commons on your flickr account.

If you have any questions, please shoot us an email through aaron@hobartpulp.com.

Thank you.
